Nerve analysis

As the main task for my AS Media studies coursework was to produce a thriller opening I decided to have a look at some different opening to films, and what makes thrillers different to other films. As I was looking I came across a great website called Art Of The Title which shows screenshots of popular title sequences and one of these was a popular film called Nerve.
Nerve is an American thriller which was released in 2016 by a director called Henry Joost. The film is based on a book written by Jeanne Ryan in 2012 and had many good reviews. The film is about a teenager at school who ends up finding herself playing an online game of dares which results in her having to do crazy stunts. The reason this films appealed to me was because of its modern opening. The title sequence is mad e up of popular software from computers, tablets and smartphones. The zeitgeist is very incorporated into this title sequence as this is what most teens world revolve around.
The title sequence introduces the directors, screenplay writers, actors and who wrote the book the film was based on. This gives credit to these people, while still showing the audience hints about the film.

The first names which appear are the directors. Although this doesn't show us much about the film, this is usually shown near the beginning as it allows the audience to know what genre the film may be, if it is done by a specific director who usually keeps to the same genre. In this film this shot shows the loading screens on old computers, which shows the audience the theme of the film already, and that it will be associated with technology. The bright colours of this and the contrasting background shows the names nice and clear. This means that there is nothing else for the audience to focus on, showing the importance of the directors.
Next it shows who wrote the screenplay and who wrote the novel it was based on. Now these people are very important because essentially without a screenplay this film wouldn't have been made, as there would be no characters, or plot. This is why the font is so bold, because it shows the importance of the people.
Next up the producers are shown. These are incredibly important roles and this is why they are shown towards the start of the film. The mini animated gifs show that the film is going to be dangerous, which is also shown by the yellow and black mise-en-scene.
Next the director of photography is shown on what looks like a slideshow software such as powerpoint. The director of photography is important in a film as this person is the chief out of the camera crew working on the film. This means that they help to choose all of the camera angles used and this person is responsible for making the artistic decisions related to the image.
Next up is the production designer, who helps to create the mise-en-scene which helps to create a sense of realism within the film. This person works closely with the producer and director in order to create a perfect image of what they expect the film to look like.
Next up is the editors. Now, these people help to create a film, from a few short clips of video. These people help to choose which clips are selected and used and then they add in any additional sounds, effects and transitions to create the perfect, smooth film. They also may remove any continuity errors which have been spotted throughout the editing process.
Next we have the costume designers, which is again, a very important job. These people work with the production designer to create the outfits used within the scene. This can help to create the time which it is supposed to happen, or the type of person it is. This job can be very important as some clothes help to represent different characters.
Next up, we have the person who decides and creates the music used in the film, and the music supervisors. This is very important as music can be used to create tension, or make people feel sad. Music is very important in a film as it can change the mood which is being represented.
After this we have the co-producers. This is shown as a snapchat which is a very popular social media app amongst teenagers where they send photos to each other. This allows the producers to appeal to the teenage market and allows the audience to empathise with the characters in the situations they are in.
Next up we have the main actors. This can help to sell a film if it has actors in which people recognise, but it also gives the actors credit for their work. In this example it shows the actors in bold writing on a black background showing the importance of these actors to the film.
